VLOOKUP function is a built-in Excel function that is used to find or lookup or reference the value in the index column. It is also used as a worksheet WS function, means VLOOKUP function is also part of the sheet and entered into the cell.
In the simple way we can define the VLOOKUP function as follows:
=VLOOKUP(Value you want to lookup, range of the cells where you want to reference of lookup the value, the column number within the range containing the returning value, you have to choose one option from the list, either exact match or approximate match)
How the Function will works:
When you are working with the VLOOKUP function, you have to enter the following four piece of information in the following order:
- Value which you want to lookup, also called the lookup value or reference value.
- The range of the cells where the reference or lookup value are located. One thing in your mind the value which you looking up or referencing must be in the first column of the range, then the VLOOKUP function will be performed correctly.
- The column number within the range selected above, from where you are looking to return the value.
- Lastly, you have to choose one of the available option, either you have to choose the approximate match or you have to choose the exact match.
